Snow Pack

We are smack-dab in the middle of winter at the moment. A few decent fishing reports from the main stem of the Flathead are trickling in. Nymphs and streamers are working well in the slow wintery spots. Maybe we will see some fish up on midges soon… Thoughts of the upcoming season are starting to bubble as folks are booking up prime dates (book now if you want to secure your favorite guide). Skwala dry fly variations are brewing in the back of the brain and the dreaded pile of worms needs to be tied. It’s hard to focus on fishing and tying flies when there is knee deep powder turns to be had. A little winter exercise never hurts either.

We are looking pretty good for snow at this point. Approaching average anyway. We are always hoping for average or above for good mid/late summer flows and water temps. Anything can happen with the weather but a pile of snow in the hills is a nice security blanket. The last few years we’ve had above average snow, and while it didn’t keep the fires away, it made for good fishing straight through the heat of summer. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for more snow this winter and less smoke this summer.
