Bigfork Montana Fly Fishing Report | Mother’s Day Caddis
The rivers are all dropping and setting up for another window of fishing. If the trend continues we could see some great fishing for a few days before the big flood. March browns, bwos, skwalas, and caddis are all common this time of year and can provide some of the best dry fly fishing of the season if you catch it right. Those who have fished our western freestones during a mothers day window know it can be epic. Look for Mother’s day caddis to show in the coming weeks and keep your fingers crossed for some fishable river conditions.
Run-off Season Options
The Missouri River will continue to provide a stable nymphing option through run-off and even at big flows there should be some dry fly opportunities for those willing to look. The lower Swan and Bigfork Bay are also fishing fair with a few nice fish finding the net. Streamers and tandem nymphs will provide the best luck…though some fish have been rising in the Bay.
Lake fishing is also great right now. The ice is off most low level lakes and the fish are on the feed bag. The rainbows should be finishing up the false spawn and will be more willing to eat now that they are coming off spawn mode..
The Montana official fishing season small stream/river opener is only 9 days away…

Hey Jay, hope all is well my man, long time no talk. I know you talked to Jimmy Wing a few weeks ago and he had told you about my dad. It’s been one hell of a year to say the least. Looks like you’re still doing your thing out there with the guys, guiding people to smash monster fish. I love it. Hopefully i’ll be able to get out there and see you guys again and catch some fish. I’ll talk to you soon.
