Hi 29 °F

Mild temps and the lack of any new snow have the skis in the closet. Until we see another dump of powder, fishing will be at the forefront of the cabin fever fix. Tolerable weather is providing decent fishing options on most of the main rivers. The Missouri below Holter is still the most productive option but there are other fishable waters for those willing to explore. We hit the Three Forks section of the Missouri a couple days ago and caught a few nice fish on streamers. It was fun to mix it up a bit. We didn’t see another human and the sun was out. We had a few sips of whiskey and scooped a couple fish over 20”………can’t complain.

Ben “Snore’m” Corem from Whitefish sent us this pic today from the famous Bitterroot “side channel” that has been talked about so much recently. You can always hit the spring influenced channels of the Root and have some success in the winter months.

The Thompson River, Main Flathead, and lower Clark Fork will all give up a few fish on warmer days too. Find a good slow run and bob it out. The Bigfork Bay / Lower Swan are starting to see a few anglers trying their luck for a big lake run bow or cutt. We haven’t heard if they have actually had any. As most know, this is the time of year they start to show.

A turd and a worm is all you need to catch fish on the freestones this time of year. If you’re too cool to fish a worm then put on a streamer and fish it slow. Glo bugs and beads destroy fish in the spring if you really want to get dirty.

Bigfork Brewfest is Saturday Feb 25th so come on out and enjoy some quality MT brews.
