Fall Fishing Report – Western Montana

The rain has continued and the rivers are in great shape with above average flows for this time of year. Warm weather and sunshine is returning and the clean air and fall weather is really nice. Fishing has also been productive. The bump in flows has stirred up a few nicer fish in our drainages keeping things interesting. We are transitioning between terrestrial fishing and fall aquatic insects. Hoppers, ants and beetles are still in play on warm sunny afternoons, but fall caddis and mayfly patterns are certainly relevant and it is advised to give them some play time. Cold mornings may require a dropper. The standards are all working – prince nymphs, P-tail jigs, hare’s ears, PRLs, SJWs etc.  Or just sleep in, wait for the sun to hit the water and throw dry flies. All of our rivers have great flows and are fishing well providing lots of options for everyone to spread out and enjoy.

Logan pass just got a dose of snow and winter is around the corner – get out and enjoy the fall before Jack Frost starts nipping…
