Run-off season is underway. However, there’s always a few windows of opportunity to hit our freestone rivers during the spring snow melt event. When nights get cold and the rivers drop back into shape during run-off, it’s arguably some of the best fishing of the year. Yesterday was one of those days. March brown mayflies pouring off all afternoon with nemora and skwala stones mixed in, fish were rising river wide and a single skwalla was all you needed. We also didn’t see another human. It was a nostalgic throwback to how guiding used to be in the late 90’s – no people and great dry flyfishing… Anyway, it looks like the Clark Fork, Blackfoot, and Flathead rivers will hang in there for another day or 2 before they head back up. Keep your eyes on the graphs and give us a call if you want some intel or a guide trip.
The Missouri River is also fishing great and will continue to be a great option through the run-off season. We have guides there for the foreseeable future if you want to get a day in. BWOs, March browns, and caddis are out. Dry dropper/short leash nymphing are productive disciplines and fun methods to fish when you’re not working on risers.
Flathead Valley – pike, bass, and all area trout lakes will provide some local fishing entertainment as the rivers go in and out of shape over the next month or so. We have a below average snow pack this year so look for great river conditions as run-off should subside early in June this year.
We have lots of new BFA schwag, some custom NRS fishing Dodger raft packages, new flies, and all sorts of new goods trickling in. We are there most days 9-5 so give us a call and swing in.
