The rivers are all cresting and turning back down from our first spring push of snow melt. The warm temps we had the past week started to kick out some low level snow but things are already settling. The rivers should continue to improve the next few days. Skwala stones, March browns, BWOs, and little spring stones will make their appearance in good numbers once things settle. The warmest part of the day will be your best opportunity to find insect activity and rising fish. Deep droppers off an oversized winged skwala, tanden nymph rigs, and slow swung streamers will work when fish aren’t up.
Run-off is still a few weeks out and we should see some good dry fly fishing before the big gusher. We have a decent snow pack so the rivers will be in and out of shape over the next several weeks. Keep an eye on the graphs and hit the down slope. Once the bugs pop in good numbers, fish will spread out and the dry fly action will pick up.
Ice is starting to come off the lakes so take a drive to see if your favorite lakes is open. Balanced leeches, scuds, hairears, pts etc are all good for ice off.
