General Outlook: We are experiencing a nice cool patch of weather with some clouds and a little rain. Unfortunaley it also brought some lightning and wind. None the less, we are creeping out of the dog days of summer and the fishing will continue to improve over the next few weeks.
Blackfoot River Report: Good. Lots of fish eating dry dropper rigs and good average sized fish. Not just a twink fest. A few hecubas popped out today and fish should start to respond well to a large parachute or cripple in brown / purple. Pretty consistent overall. Early worm gets the fish.
Bugs / Fly Patterns: Hecubas, terrestrials / Small Chubbies and willies, Fuzzie wuzzies, Hot leg hoppers, White Clouds, Pink Morrish Hoppers, Rainy’s ants, Hippie stompers, Franks, Rogue goldens, Smaller foam variations, Para haze, Turds, Halo Prince, Da Worm
Lower Clark Fork River Report: This cool weather should make things nice. It’s been pretty good anyway. Days in the mid 90s are not the best but there are fish looking for hoppers. It’s not fast and furious but the afternoon hopper bite will keep you interested. Hecubas should show soon and a big cripple or haze chute will search as well as a hopper. Droppers are working pretty well but you can trim them off after lunch and stick with the hopper.
Bugs / Fly Patterns: hecubas soon, terrestrials / peach white clouds, pink morish, Small Chubbies and willies, Fuzzies, Hippie stompers, Franks, Rogue goldens, Smaller foam variations, Para haze, Quigs, Para caddis, C-duns, Turds, Halo Prince, Da worm
Flathead River Report: So so. No rhyme or reason out there right now. Maybe we’ll see some flying ants soon and things will pick up. The traffic on this river will start to slow down soon and the fishing should improve. It’s not great right now but it’s convenient and we’re still getting some fish to eat dry flies.
Bugs / Fly Patterns: terrestrials / Small Chubbies and willies, Fuzzie wuzzies, Hot leg hoppers, White Clouds, Pink Morrish Hoppers, Rainy’s ants, Hippie stompers, Franks, Rogue goldens, Smaller foam variations, Para haze, Quigs, Para caddis, rusty spinners C-duns, Turds, Halo Prince, Da Worm
Swan River Report: The upper river is hit and miss on the dry. There are a few bigger fish willing to eat up top but it’s mostly twinks. Droppers work and still give you the chance at a big one on the dry. If you are desperate you can bobber fish but don’t let your buddies catch you…kinda embarrassing this time of year. The lower river is fishing well with the hopper dropper rigs. We haven’t had a good water temp report but it’s probably really warm late in the day. Early morning would be best. A foamie with a SJW or turd off the back should be all you need.
