Ryan Stultz with a happy first timer.

Summer has finally arrived, officially and weather wise. The torrential rain is making its way out of our rivers and we will have more options very soon. The Flathead is still huge and out of shape but it is dropping fast and will likely fish before the end of the month. We are still focusing on the Blackfoot River for most of our trips. Unfortunately, so is everyone else in western Montana. The reports from the last two days on the Blackfoot have been all over the board from great to terrible.  As the Bitterroot and Clark Fork drop the traffic will thin out on the Blackfoot  and the fishing should get more consistent with fewer boats pounding their face in everyday. For now it’s still the best option for a full day out of the Flathead Valley, especially if you want to catch some fish on dry flies. The Clark Fork is coming around and will be a great option here pretty quick.

For those willing to make the 3+ hour drive over to Missouri the fishing will be great. We’ve had quite a few trips out over there the last few weeks and all have had great fishing. The Missouri is by far the best thing going right now if you’re willing to make the haul, but our western freestones are on the verge of some great dry fly fishing…
